IMPORTANT NOTICE -- READ CAREFULLY: The Splinter Cell demo has very specific hardware requirements. It is important that your PC meets these requirements, particularly that your graphics and sound card are DirectX 8.1 compliant. The most common error is a General Protection Fault which returns the following info: History: ResetDevice <- UD3DRenderDevice::SetRes <- UWindowsViewport::Exec If the demo fails on startup, go to the folder where Splinter Cell is installed, then into the System folder. Open the file SplinterCellUser.ini and search for "Resolution=". By default, it is set to 640x480. Change it to another one of the supported resoltuions (800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, or 1600x1200). Try running the demo again and it should work. HOWEVER, the problem may return the next time you start the demo. Just go back into the file and change the resolution again.
